Getting started
- First launch: ThinkAloud downloads its on-device AI model (~2.4 GB) once. You need roughly 3 GB of free storage and a Wi-Fi connection for the download.
- Capture: tap the microphone and speak naturally — the screen stays awake while you record. Tap the stop button when you're done, review the take (play it back, keep it or discard it), and the app writes the note — title, tags, and formatting — entirely on the device.
- Photos: tap the camera icon to photograph a whiteboard or document (long-press for the photo library). The image is turned into a written note on-device.
- Your notes are files: every note is a plain Markdown file in an Obsidian-compatible vault. On iOS the vault is visible in the Files app; on Android, Windows, and macOS you pick the folder.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the app asking to download 2.4 GB?
That's the Gemma AI model that powers transcription, tagging, and "Ask your vault." It is downloaded once, stored locally, and is the reason no audio or text ever needs to leave your device.
Does ThinkAloud work offline?
Yes. After the one-time model download, capture, transcription, search, and Ask all work with no network connection. Only optional sync needs connectivity.
How do I set up sync?
Settings → Sync. Choose Google Drive (any platform) or
iCloud (Apple platforms). Sync writes your Markdown files to your own
cloud account — Google Drive uses a private app-created folder
(My Drive › ThinkAloud); iCloud uses the app's container,
visible in the Files app. We run no servers and never see your notes.
Can I edit my notes in another app?
Yes — that's the point. The vault is plain Markdown compatible with Obsidian
and any text editor. Wikilinks ([[like this]]), tags, and checklists
use standard syntax.
Recording doesn't start / no transcription appears
- Check the microphone permission in system settings.
- Make sure the AI model finished downloading (Settings shows model status).
- On-device inference needs a recent device; very old hardware may not be able to run the model.
How do I delete my data?
Your notes are local files — delete them in the app, in the Files app, or in your vault folder. If sync is enabled, deletions propagate to your Drive/iCloud copy (Drive deletions go to its Trash). Disconnecting sync in Settings removes the stored sign-in token. See the privacy policy for details.
